Understanding Archive Independence
A warehouse loader should begin with a source contract and a small inspection batch. Reddit Data API is an independent historical archive, not live Reddit or an official platform service. Decide which question the stored material can answer, and describe coverage uncertainty in the dataset notes. Do not treat a historical response as evidence of current platform activity or the continued existence of the original post.
Reproducibility is a property to design into your own saved inputs and transformations, not an archive guarantee. Preserve the raw responses you actually receive, query parameters, retrieval time and a version of the loader configuration. A later reprocessing run can then use those saved inputs. Repeating the remote request may return different records, and local preservation alone does not establish exhaustive source coverage.
Use the home example https://api.redditdataapi.com/v1/posts?subreddit=python&limit=3 as an initial inspection request. Examine actual fields before creating destination columns. Distinguish absent fields from nulls, and check conversions for timestamps and numeric values. Keep flat source records separately from normalized rows. If parent_id or link_id is present, local grouping is possible, but complete conversation ancestry remains unproven.
Pipeline Discovery and Scope Definition
Write a local validation contract for the fields your analysis needs. Record the accepted types, missing-value treatment and reasons for rejecting a row. Preserve an unexpected payload for review rather than quietly coercing it. These are decisions in your loader, not server-side schema enforcement features. One small sample helps reveal assumptions, but it cannot prove that every archive record has the same shape. For example, do not silently replace a missing score with zero: those cases express different information. Record that distinction in the validation output before loading the normalized row.
Define a bounded collection manifest with the selected route, community, dates and request budget. Search supports q, subreddit, author, kind, from, to, min_score, limit and page. Dates use YYYY-MM-DD in UTC and to is inclusive. min_score does not sort. /v1/subreddits supports prefix discovery, but its counts are not guaranteed globally exact. Partitioning a workload does not guarantee complete or disjoint results.
Fetch one page per request, up to 100 records, with page limited to 1 through 100. Save the actual response before recording a local checkpoint. Use /v1/item with id for a known record; id is not a posts or comments filter. The _doc order is not chronological or relevance based, so a page checkpoint cannot guarantee that a resumed remote traversal contains no gaps or duplicates.
Handling Limits, Errors, and Verification
Before loading the target table, compare accepted rows with the raw batch and record exclusions. Where suitable identifiers exist, apply and document a local duplicate-handling rule rather than assuming remote pages are unique. Retain the pagination relation: eq means exact total, gte a lower bound, and unknown no reliable total. Even an exact total is not proof that the client downloaded every match.
Handle 400 by correcting parameters, 401 by checking the key, 402 by pausing or funding the account, and 429 by waiting. Failed upstream retrievals refund reservations, while successful empty responses cost one credit. A lost client response may follow a billable success; another successful attempt costs another credit. Consult the pricing page when setting the collection budget and the key page for password-confirmed credential replacement.
Use /v1/status only to check the static disclosure and HTTP responsiveness. Its uncharged success says nothing about search health or availability of a particular record. Validate actual retrieval responses before advancing a load. Keep credentials outside warehouse exports and shared manifests. After a local schema change, rerun transformations against saved samples before accepting new batches; this tests your own processing, not archive immutability.
